Website: http://www.aussiepinshop.com.au                  Email: pins@aussiepinshop.com.au
It’s been a couple of months since I had any PIN NEWS to report, hence the absence of the monthly newsletter.  However, this month will certainly make up for it!  There are so many new pins being released that I’m sure most pincollectors will be able to find something to add to their collections.  To make life a little easier, I’ve included direct links to each category so if you see something that’s of interest, just click on the underlined link.  Here we go……..

WHAT’S NEW?

1.        Rugby World Cup 2007 – France.  Two pins and a keyring have been released.

2.       New7Wonders – This AMAZING Collection of 21 pieces will be available in April 07.  Pre-Orders are being taken as the worldwide demand is expected to be huge. You can purchase your favourite candidate, or the full set of all 21 pins.  The full set comes with a backing board and is available for a limited time only!

Don't forget to lodge your VOTE and see which 7 the 21 Official Candidate Cities are announced as the New 7 Wonders during the Official Declaration ceremony in Lisbon, Portugal on Saturday, July 7, 2007 - 07.07.07.  Follow the link above to be directed to the New7Wonders website.

3.       ICC Cricket World Cup – West Indies.  Competition starts next week and a limited series of pins has been released.  Also for Cricket enthusiasts, there are still a few of the Ashes Series pins available.

4.       12th FINA World Swimming Championships – Melbourne, Australia.  Also starts next week and a limited series of pins covering swimming, diving, waterpolo, syncronised swimming, ocean swimming has been released.  Competiting Nation flag pins are extremely limited.

6.       Sydney 2000 – It’s hard to believe that after 7 years I’m still finding pins I didn’t have.  Paralympic Athletes Village Venue pin (shiny silver so scan is dreadful) and a Sydney 2000 Let’s Celebrate cutout pin.

7.       NRL – Sydney Roosters 100 Years pin.  Also there are still a few of the Brisbane Broncos 2006 Premiership pin available.

REMINDERS!

AUSSIE PIN SHOP NEWS - APRIL 2006

Email:    pins@aussiepinshop.com.au

http://www.aussiepinshop.com.au

G'day everyone,  Well, what a fantastic fortnight we’ve just had with the Melbourne Commonwealth Games.  Melbourne certainly turned on a grand performance and the weather was beautiful.  71 Nations competed in 17 sports and the venues, spectators and competition was first class.  From a pin collecting point of view, there has been mixed reviews.  Whilst the Volunteers did a sterling job, they were reluctant to trade any pins they received, even if duplicated.  They were the only people I saw with pins!!!  There was no “pin trading centre” or designated area where we could trade pins, and when we set up on the banks of the Yarra, we were moved on within 20 minutes as we didn’t have a “permit”.  The Superstore who were selling merchandise including pins, had a buy two, swap one suggestion for their pins.  Only problem was, there wasn’t anyone to swap the spare one with!!!!  Many of the sponsors located themselves in a unique area near to the Yarra River and their displays were well supported by the general public – but not a pin was in sight!   Those sponsors who did produce pins distributed them to their staff members.  I can never understand the logic in this practice as the staff already knows the company’s products, the general public may not.  A pin distributed freely helps spread product awareness!

Regardless of the above, I was able to trade with the athletes at the Athletes Village.  Countries who did not produce a Commonwealth Games pin for the occasion were:  Anguilla, Lesotho, Cameroon, Uganda, Maldives (old NOC), Malawi, India (new NOC), Sri Lanka (NOC), Brunei (NOC cutout), Mauritius (3 NOCs, 1 other), St Helena (generic).

Sponsor pins that were seen include: National Bank x 3 + Queen’s Baton Relay pin, Cadbury 1 + 1 staff pin, Mutual Community, Schneker, Price Waterhouse, Allen Anderson, Telstra, Australia Post – 1 spinner, 4 stamp pins, RACV – 5 pins, Coates Hire – 7 so far + 1 silver corporate,  Tabaret 6 pins, Accor Hotels, DeBortoli Wines (never seen), Qantas.  Government department pins – Victoria Police, Australian Government.

Hottest pins from Melbourne – Closing Ceremony pin (1000 only), Brunei, Swaziland, Belize, Athletes Village (only venue pin issued).

To access all pins from my home page, please scan down to the images and use the hyperlink on the right hand side of your preference.

NEW PINS:  NRL – Titans Jersey pin (new team entering competition 2007), 2006 Melbourne Commonwealth games. Little Britain TV Series – small selection of pins and badges (Miscellaneous)

G'day everyone,

Happy New Year and all the very best for a very prosperous and healthy 2006.  2006 looks like being a huge year for us collectors as we prepare for the Torino Winter Games, Melbourne Commonwealth Games, and the World Cup Soccer in Germany.

Here in Australia, the main focus is on the Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games due to start in March, followed by the Socceroos Soccer World Cup appearance after a long, long drought.

Pins and merchandising products for the Melbourne Games are out and about (see link below), and the arrival of the Queen’s Baton and subsequent relay throughout Australia will certainly herald the commencement of the Games in grand style.  The Queen’s baton is due to arrive in Australia on Tuesday, January 24.  The  2006 Queen’s Baton Relay is the world’s longest, most inclusive relay.  It will have covered more than 180,000 kms and visited all Commonwealth member nations – a total of 71 – by the time it arrives in Melbourne for the opening ceremony.  The Australian leg of the relay will commence on Wednesday, 25 January and arrive in Sydney on Australia Day.  Many community festivities are organised for Australia Day and the relay will put the icing on the birthday cake this year.

If any collectors find any Commonwealth Games sponsor pins, please let me know and I’ll pass the information on.  At this stage, the only one I’m aware of is the Tabaret 6 pin series which is available from their outlets in Melbourne.  I’ll be in Melbourne during the games (15-28 March) and am happy to hunt out any requests.  Just let me know by email to:  pins@aussiepinshop.com.au

To access all pins from my home page, please scan down to the images and use the hyperlink on the right hand side of your preference.

AUSSIE PIN SHOP NEWS - AUGUST 2005

G'day everyone,

It seems hard to believe that we are approaching 5 YEARS AFTER THE SYDNEY OLYMPIC GAMES ANNIVERSARY.  For those many die-hard collectors here in Sydney, a huge swapmeet has been scheduled for Saturday, 17th September at The Clocktower, The Rocks from 8am – 3 pm.  This swapmeet is the most important on our calendar and attracts many collectors and volunteers.  It’s a great opportunity to catch up with Olympic friends that you haven’t seen for ages and add a few new pins to your collection.  Bring along your swaps and enjoy the friendly atmosphere.

Commonwealth Games Pins– are just starting to be seen.  This week, eight new sporting pictograms featuring Karak, the official mascot, have been released.  The sports are:  badminton, basketball, hockey, rugby 7s, shooting, weightlifting, triathlon and gymnastics.   Stocks are limited, so if they interest you, please be quick.    I also have a few Manchester 2002 Games pins – Mascot/flag and sporting pictograms.

Athens 2004 pins/merchandise

Stock levels have really been reduced during July and the selection of pins is quite small now.  Athens pins will be split into their respective categories – sporting pins, NOCs, etc. so it may take a bit more hunting to find them.

McDonalds Australia released a set of Sporting Cards with Happy Meal toys during the Athens 2004 Games.  I have a few sets of the cards available but once again, be quick as they won’t last long.

At the end of this newsletter is a list of WANTED pins.  Many collectors ask for various items so you may be able to help them along with their collections.  To navigate the Aussie Pin Shop, please use links on the Home (Main) Page to locate your area of interest.  This link will take you to the Main Page.

Reminders:

Sydney 2000 pins – A full set of the Trofe Days of the Games pins is now on hand, plus a few of the pictogram series harder-to-find pins.  For anyone looking to complete any Pictograms sets, please email me with your “wants” as I may be able to locate them for you.  Paralympic sporting pins are also back in stock but in limited quantities.

NOVEMBER 2004

Email: pins@aussiepinshop.com.au
Website:
http://www.aussiepinshop.com.au

G'day everyone,

With less than 7 weeks to the festive season, our minds are probably not thinking about our pin collections.  However, several interesting things have happened which you may find of interest:

 1)                 Dr Who pins and keyrings have just been released and are available by following this link.

2)                 During the month there has been a lot of discussion by the pin community about sending pins around the world.  There seems to be occasions when every country’s postal system experiences delays and the odd lost package, etc.    However, one of the countries very much in the discussion was Greece where collectors reported a large number of lost packages from the US to that country.  So many, in fact, that many US collectors are reluctant to forward any pins to the Greek collectors.  This is a real shame and I’d just like to say that I haven’t encountered the same problems with mail going from Australia.  Sure there’s been packages that have taken so long we all thought they were lost, but in the end they turn up safe and sound.  One small package sent to the US took eight  weeks to arrive (instead of the usual 7-10 days) so it can happen anywhere/any time. To the many Greek pin collectors who must now feel completely isolated, if you’re looking for pins for your collection, I’m happy to trade with you whenever you please and have no fear in doing so.

3)       CHRISTMAS SWAPMEET, SYDNEY – SUNDAY, 12th December from 8am.

Following the huge success of the 4 Years After Anniversary Swapmeet, the Sydney Pin Collectors will be holding a Special Christmas Swapmeet at The Clocktower, The Rocks on SUNDAY, 12th December from 8 am.  Please email: sydneypincollectors@yahoo.com to book a table.  If the previous swapmeet is any indication, Sydney collectors will have a fabulous day.  Thanks to the organisers for this terrific initiative.

ATHENS PINS:  There certainly has been quite a lot of activity surrounding the Athens pins.  Many collectors have gaps in their collections and I’m beginning to wonder where all the pins have gone.  The Sporting Venue pins have proven to be a real headache to find along with NOCs from some of the smaller countries.  At least one unauthorised NOC has been identified – that of Eritrea and doubt surrounds the lovely Fiji turtle pin.  Also, I noticed that a large number of countries produced only undated generic NOCs and many used those seen in Sydney.  Please continue to visit the NOC Athens pin category as I still have a few pins yet to scan and post up.

Also going up will be Athens sponsor pins, media pins and Sports Federation pins.  If you’re looking for anything specific please email me and I’ll check if I have it.

There are a number of collectors who are trying desperately to find certain pins from Sydney, Athens, etc.  I’m happy to list these in the PINS WANTED section and put you in touch with any collector who indicates they have what you’re looking for.  Just email me and hopefully this could assist your search.

SPORTS PINS – Reminder - Following numerous requests, I have now compiled ALL the sports pins (including Athens sporting pins) under the one section – SPORTING PINS.  Pins are now grouped under their respective sports categories and include everything from generic pins, Olympic, Federation, novelty, etc.

GIVE-AWAY – Due to the huge success of the General-Motors Holden pin give-away, I am pleased to advise that I now have a small quantity of the very first pin issued for the Sydney 2000 Games – The Sun Herald 3 Years to Go pin.  Therefore, all orders received during November and December will receive this FREE pin.

Help Identify This new category has been widely supported and I must say you are a clever bunch out there.  During this month 4 previously unidentified pins have found a name and a home.  Thanks to everyone who contributed and don’t forget there’s a “thank-you” Kodak pin for your efforts. If you’ve got any pins that you have no idea what they are (except for anything in Greek), send me an image and I’ll post them up for you.

Mailing List – The Mailing List is updated regularly so this could be your first Monthly Newsletter – if so, welcome!  For everyone’s peace of mind, please be assured that this mailing list is not shared with anyone else, so by subscribing to it, you will receive only the Aussie Pin Shop monthly newsletter and nothing else.  However, if you’re tired of getting this newsletter, please use the “unsubscribe” section below and I’ll make sure you don’t have to suffer any longer!

Please don’t forget if you’ve got anything you’d like the rest of us to know about, please email me and I’ll pass it on. Interesting articles, suggestions, information on new pins, Swapmeets, etc. are all welcome.

 OCTOBER 2004

 G'day everyone,

Here we are nearly 7 weeks since the Athens 2004 Games finished and now the 2004 Paralympics has also come to a close.  Congratulations to all athletes who took part in both events.  It has been a real pleasure to watch their performances and share a small piece of their achievements.  Well done to everyone involved – athletes, officials, volunteers and supporters; 2004 has certainly been a spectacular and successful year!

Collecting News - Collectors of memorabilia have been treated to a treasure trove of goodies, none more so than here in Australia.  Whilst most of the action may have been in Athens, the Australian Olympic Committee produced a full range of Boxing Kangaroo souvenirs which could be found in Australia Post offices.  The range varied from pins (AOC logo and Boxing Kangaroo mascot), magnets, keyrings, stickers, soft toys and Gold Medallions (and probably other items as well).  It is interesting to note that sports such as Rugby and Netball (non-Olympic sports) were included in the Medallion series.  If anyone has been lucky enough to come across a full set of these medallions would you please let us know what sports were covered.

Torino 2006 – The 2006 mascots have been launched – Neve (female) and Gliz (Male).  If you’d like to see what they look like, just email me and I can send you a picture.  I’ll give more information about the mascots in November’s newsletter.

4 Years After Swapmeet – Sydney.  Pin collecting and trading is still alive and well in Sydney as was evidenced by the wonderful event which was staged at The Clocktower on Sunday, 19th September.  (This date commemorated, as close as was possible, 4 years since the opening of the Sydney Games.)  The committee and its team of workers did a wonderful job transforming the shopping centre into a spectacular pin trading venue which was enjoyed by hundreds of enthusiasts during the day.  It was so nice to catch up with collectors who only attend this once a year swapmeet and also to see the array of pins that people found in the bottom of drawers, wardrobes, etc.  I came home with a few “new” Sydney pins to add to my collection!   Collectors from around the world who attended the One Year Before the Games swapmeet weekend will no doubt be casting their thoughts back to the wonderful time we all had at the same venue.  Was that really 5 years ago?

Sydney Swapmeets - The Clocktower at The Rocks every 2nd Saturday. 8am-2pm. Next one will be held on Saturday, 9th October.

Sponsor Pins – A gentle reminder to keep your eyes out for the new pins from Qantas, Energy Australia and Accor.  All three companies are sponsors of the Australian Team and produced a 2004 pin.  Images can now be seen on the website.

Athens Pins -  There is now quite a comprehensive collection of Athens pins on the website.  NOCs, Sponsors, Media, Sporting, Sporting Federation, Countdown and Retail can be found.  There are now a few Paralympic pins as well although these have proved quite difficult to come by.  If anyone has any Athens pins to trade I would be happy to receive an email.  If you just want to have a look at what was produced and compare them to your Sydney 2000 pins, you may be pleasantly surprised.  There certainly wasn’t the range of pins in Athens that we have come to expect and not nearly as many sponsor pins.

New Pins – The “New Listing” section has fallen by the wayside in recent weeks/months but I hope to resurrect it during October.  In the meantime, just a quick note to let you know that there is a new range of Dr. Who pins and keyrings that has just been added under the Miscellaneous pin section.  Also Coca Cola Opening and Closing Ceremony pins for Athens, along with one of the nicest oversize pins I’ve seen, from Aminco.

GIVE-AWAY – Thanks to the generosity of General-Motors, all orders placed during October will receive a complimentary (FREE) Sydney 2000 Holden pin on a card. This offer has been extended as I still have just received some extras. If you’ve already received one of these pins, please let me know and I’ll substitute a Kodak sports pin instead.

Help Identify – A new category has been added listing pins that I have been unable to identify (and there are heaps more from Athens!). With such knowledgeable collectors out there, I’m sure the answers will pour in! If you’ve got any pins that you have no idea what they are, send me an image and I’ll post them up for you.  If you are able to identify any of the pins listed in the Section “Help Identify” I’ll forward you a free pin of my choice as a “thank you”– first in gets it!

SEPTEMBER 2004 NEWLETTER

Email: pins@aussiepinshop.com.au
Website:
http://www.aussiepinshop.com.au

G'day everyone,

Australia’s triumphant Olympic team has arrived home to a well-deserved heros’ welcome and our sights are now set on the Melbourne Commonwealth Games in 2006 (556 days to go) and Beijing 2008.  Australia’s total medal haul was 17 Gold, 14 Silver and 16 Bronze making Athens our best Olympics ever.   It will be hard to top the emotion of the past 16 days, but for us Sydneysiders, Wednesday 15th September could do just that when our Olympians will be “welcomed home” with a parade through our city streets. Apologies to the overseas readers for the above parochial sentiments!

Thanks to everyone who placed orders whilst I was in Athens and especially for your patience.  Most orders have now been filled and posted out; only a few remain and will be finalised over the weekend.

Athens – what a buzz!  It was everything we knew it would be plus more.  The weather was perfect (if not a bit hot at times), the locals were extremely friendly including the stray dogs that managed to escape the roundup, the venues were finished (not the landscaping) and the place looked pretty good.  Most of the transport got us from A to B very efficiently and in the second week, the Athens crowds realised something big was happening and came out to support their athletes.  On the pin front, the Coca Cola Pin Trading Centre was really isolated and quite a trip to get to.  The first week it wasn’t well patronised but did improve as the games progressed.  Other places where pin traders did quite well were Monastraki Square, the Plaka and the OKOA (Olympic Stadium).  Selling was discouraged and most people abided by the rules – those who didn’t found themselves being asked to leave!  There didn’t seem to be as many pins produced as for Sydney; and sponsor and media pins were quite hard to find.  They eventually did surface but not in great numbers.

ARTICLE ON PIN COLLECTING – SMH and The Age “Money Section” 11 August, 2004.  If anyone missed this very interesting article on our hobby, I have reproduced it under PIN NEWS.  It certainly is worth a read.  A similar article was also included in “O News” which is a newspaper sent to all students in New South Wales.

NEW PINS:  Over the next few weeks I will be posting up Athens NOCs including Belize, Grenada, Great Britain, Suriname, Mexico, San Marino, Libya, Lebanon, Mali, Ghana, Cote d’Ivory, Congo, Kenya, Guatamala, Portugal, Peru, India, Indonesia, Caymen Islands, Malta, etc.  Please check daily for new additions as I have only a small number available.  It was interesting to note that a number of countries came with undated NOCs which were not the same as those used in Sydney.  All the NOCs listed under the ATHENS NOC category were those collected by me whilst there.
